Angelo and Biomodd at TED!
Angelo Vermeulen was selected as a TED 2010 Fellow! Woohoo! Diego feels particularly proud about writing the reference letter for him. Check out these a few of these photos. |
Talk for European Space Agency: Fusing technology and organic life
In March 2009, Angelo Vermeulen gave a talk about his science/art projects for ESA’s MELiSSA research group. His talk focused on Biomodd. MELiSSA (Micro-Ecological Life Support System Alternative) has been conceived as a micro-organisms and higher plants based ecosystem intended as a tool to gain understanding of the behaviour of artificial ecosystems, and for the development of a future regenerative life support system for long term manned space missions, e.g. a lunar base or a mission to Mars. Biomodd [LBA2] Second and Final Exhibit
The University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) and the Biomodd [LBA2] Team, in cooperation with De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde School of Design and Arts, are pleased to present the second and final exhibition of Biomodd [LBA2] in the Philippines. The show opens September 1, 2009, Tuesday, 6:00 pm at mcad (Museum of Contemporary Art and Design) and runs until September 25.
Biomodd is an interactive and collaborative art project that integrates nature and technology. One of aims of the project is to create an art installation in which different forms of plant life coexist with a fully functioning computer system. This system is built almost entirely from recycled computers, and plant growth is stimulated by the excess heat of the working electronics. Visitors can interact with the art installation by playing a multiplayer computer game that runs on this hybrid system.
An idea by Belgian biologist-turned-artist Angelo Vermeulen, Biomodd is now an international collaboration, with installations being set up in different countries. The first version was made in Athens, Ohio in 2007 when Vermeulen was artist in residence at the Ohio University's Aesthetic Technologies Lab . At present, Biomodd is in the Philippines and was produced and first exhibited in Los Baños. Other Biomodd versions will soon be launched in Singapore and Brazil.
mcad is housed in the School of Design and Arts, De La Salle-College of St. Benilde at 950 P. Ocampo St. Malate, Manila. The 1,500 square meters of exhibion space aims to facilitate circumstances in which inventive and activist individuals can work together on common and related ideas. View the location on Google Maps.
